A fragment of a cast copper alloy two piece rectangular shoe buckle with drilled frame, dating to c.1720 - to 1790s.
The fragment consists of approximately 15% of the original buckle frame, belonging to a rectangular shoe buckle type, with a drilled frame for a separate spindle, consisting of half of the side of the buckle frame. Both faces of the buckle frame are badly abraded and degraded, but it is possible to see two rows of beaded decoration on the front of the buckle, and in the corner, a ring and dot motif, with beaded edges. The back exhibits a central ridge, and a groove where the spindle would have been located.
It measures 48.44mm in length, 9.80mm wide and 6.08mm thick. It weighs 4.9 grams.
The buckle frame is a dark green colour and is badly abraded, most likely due to movement whilst in the plough soil. The abrasion has resulted in the loss of the original surface and rounding of the edges.
This type of buckle is consistent with those used for shoes back in the Georgian period, c. 1720 to c.1790s. Similar examples are depicted in Whitehead (2003), pages 104 to 109, but none pictured exhibit the same style of decoration as this particular example.
