A fragment of briquetage. This likely to have come from a support for vessels used for the evaporation of sea water to make salt. This is associated with Roman pottery, as such is likely to be Roman in date.
The Fragment of briquetage is greenish red in colour, very coarse and hard.
85.93mm x 72.81mm x 24.00mm 137.45g
Notes:
This came from a site on the Thames Forshore. It is associated with objects KENT 1E45B5, KENT 1FC5A6, KENT 1DDC34, KENT 1DEBE0, KENT 1D9D68, KENT 1D7E45 and KENT 1FF1B8.
It was found along side a collection of briquetage(KENT 331664, KENT332DF3 and KENT 332330), and the site is believed to be a Roman salt working site. One of the vessels (KENT 1E45B5) containd the cremated remains of a puppy. Apparently this is a known occurance in Kent, where cremations of dogs are buried at salt working sites (quoted from Sarah Jane Hathaway, HER Assistant Kent County Council)
The objects / site were discovered by the finder as they had 'weathered out of the foreshore'. The finder excavatd the remains, and roughly recorded the locations in the section and recorded the GPS positions. It is likely there are further objects to be found from the site.
