A mount of later 11th or 12th century date and of uncertain purpose. The mount is flat and has a trilobe apex and two larger sideways projecting lobes. The three upper lobes are slightly truncated and bear iron staining. Centrally is a circular rivet hole. There is a further pair of small rivet holes in the two lower corners as well as a large circular hole in the centre of the lower edge. The mount is decorated with crudely-punched double or triple strands of opposed triangles which form, together with the profile of the object, opposed and joined spirals.
Notes:
This mount may be intended for a book but may have had many possible functions. The design incorporates opposed spirals and projecting lobes; these elements are typical of late Viking decorative styles.
