A very nice and complete Early Medieval Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy strap end dating to around the 9th century AD. The decoration is very well mannered with a zoomorphic terminal engraved with what looks like a horse's head with tapering elongated eyes and ears with settings possibly originally for enamel or niello. A decorative field is defined by a linear border, and is occupied by broad strap-work interlace. The decorative features represent forms derived from more animated animal interlace characteristic of the 8th / 9th centuries AD. The decoration on the front was probably once inlaid with niello of which none survives. The back face of the strap end is flat and undecorated. There are two rivet holes at the top for attaching to fabric or leather. The length is 42mm, width 15mm and thickness 4mm.
