A fragment of a vessel of Roman date. The fragment is part of the base of a Samian ware vessel. The fragment has a rectangular section which narrows towards the base and numerous white inclusions are present within the fabric. Only a small amount of the vessel proper remains with most having been broken off. The breaks are very old and worn. The interior of the base of the vessel fragment is decorated with a series of diagonally orientated incised lines.
The material is a mid brownish-orange colour and is worn with only a few small patches of the original smooth and shiny surface remaining. The fragment is 51.2mm long, 39.5mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 23.3g.
The finder believes this example to be of the Dragendorff 42 type.
