Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Aucissa or Hod Hill series bow brooch. The foot, pin and most of the terminal end are missing due to old breaks. The headplate of the brooch is flat, rectangular in form and with a single transverse ridge at its base. The rectangular bow is flat and slightly curved in profile, although has suffered from some post-depositional damage. It has two vertical ribs decorated with multiple transverse notches to give a cabled effect, at the base of which is a transverse ridge. Beneath the ridge is a slight constriction before the brooch begins to flare to the incomplete foot. This is flat, rectangular in form and has a transverse ridge at the top, the majority of the foot now incomplete due to old breaks. The back face of the brooch is flat and undecorated, with the remains of what appears to be an incomplete integrally cast catchplate just visible at the very base of the foot. It measures 29.90mm in length, 8.11mm in width at bow, 1.61mm in thickness, and weighs 1.85g.

This is an Aucissa/Hod Hill series brooch with parallels noted in Hattatt (1989: nos. 43, 1499). It is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
