An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Aucissa or Hod Hill series bow brooch. The lower half of the bow, foot, pin and part of the terminal end are all missing due to old breaks. The terminal end of the brooch is flat, flaring and has a small rectangular notch at its centre where the missing pin would have hinged. Beneath the terminal is a flat rectangular headplate with double transverse ridges containing uncertain moulded decoration. The rectangular bow is curved in profile with flanges to either side and double vertical ridges at the centre that are decorated with multiple transverse notches producing a cabled effect. Where the bow terminates there is perhaps evidence for a transverse ridge, although this is uncertain due to old breaks. The back face of the bow is flat and undecorated. It measures 20.86mm in length, 8.51mm in width at bow, 1.99mm in thickness, and weighs 1.68g.
This is an Aucissa/Hod Hill series brooch with parallels noted in Hattatt (1989: nos. 43, 1499). It is of 1st century AD date, c.43-100 AD.
