A corroded, partial, small copper-alloy gilded buckle plate of medieval date (12th to 13th century AD). The surviving plate is sub-rectangular in form and would have been of folded sheet construction. The upper surface is decorated with a raised lion passant guardant with head turned backwards within a frame; the tail curves round on itself. The field in which this sits has been stippled using small punching and then gilded, the punching presumably to help reflect light. There are two perforations towards the corners of the attachment end; one rivet survives in situ. The artefact has broken towards possible further rivet holes towards the fold and frame; part of the lion's foreleg is missing as a result. A parallel can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 111-112; ref. 500), cf. also HAMP-5733C7, HAMP-EF49D6 on this database. It is feasible that this artefact was made in the later 12th century; the heraldic design is consistent with later Romanesque motifs. The metal is now red-brown, with areas of variable green corrosion product and the gilt mentioned. One corner is bent upwards slightly at the break.
