Complete silver possible chape for which no exact parallel could be found. Formed from a hollow oval sectioned tapering piece of silver, which may have been cast as no join can now be seen, the tapering end curves one way and has a sharp pint. The open end is also unusual as it has small circular holes through it, through which there are a few surviving fragments of now brown thread. This object was therefore obviously attached to a larger object, possibly the rest of a knife scabbard via this thread.
Dimensions: 30.3mm in length, 10.6mm in width at open end and 0.6mm in width at terminal end, 2.13g in weight. Discussion: No parallel could be found for this object but its size and shape make use as a chape a possibility alternatively it could be some other strap fitting or strap end. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Faye Minter
