An impersonal or personal cast lead or lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix is a fragment of a flat-baked type which is possibly originally oval in plan. The upper face of the matrix is flat and undecorated. The underside of the matrix has a legend which reads 'WIh'. The matrix measures 19.15mm long, 11.84mm wide, 2.66mm thick. It weighs 2.2g. The surface of the matrix has a mid grey cracked patina.
Harvey and McGuinness (1996 A Guide to British Medieval Seals British Library and Public Record Office) suggest that small circular based seal matrices were in use in the 13th century, but the more intricate the designs, occurred in the later 13th to 14th centuries. It is uncertain what type of matrix this is so a more broad date of 13th to 14th century is given.
