An element from a small medieval copper-alloy spring-strip padlock case. The case is sub-oval in plan with truncated short ends, one at the end of the oval, the other at a slight extension. Above is an sub-circular cross-section bolt, initially running parallel but bent downwards at its tip towards the case, and joined to the case by a sub-rectangular arm (4.35 x 4.4 x 2.9mm). The sides of the case bow outwards. They narrow to an underside which measures 7.3mm in width. At one end the case is flush to the sides and underside. It features three sub-square perforations, two above one, the latter corresponding with the underside. At the opposite end is an aperture, sub-square with a lower extension at the base. On the underside the aperture extends into the case; the underside stops short. The corroded surface of the case appear plain.

Examples from London have come from pre 14th-century contexts, although elsewhere they have been found in later contexts (Geake 2001, 50-51). This padlock was probably used on a casket (Egan 1998, 92). It is far more bowed than the more usual cylindrical examples.
