Corroded fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative (two-piece) brooch, dating to c.50-80 AD. This fragment is from the head of the brooch. The wings spring and axial bar are all damaged and the pin, bow, foot and catchplate are all missing. The semi tubular wings are damaged and end in abraded breaks, a lug projects from beneath them at their centre and has two perforations, the upper most of which has been broken. The corroded remains of a copper alloy spring sits under the wings on a copper alloy axial bar which passes through the surviving perforation. The chord of the spring is now missing. There may have been a central longitudinal ridge running from the head down the bow although it is difficult to be certain due to the heavily worn surface. The bow ends with an abraded break just below the head. The body of the brooch has a mid-dark green patina covered with powdery mid green corrosion. The spring and axial bar are a pale green colour perhaps suggesting that they are made of a different alloy.
It is 15.7mm long across the wings, 6.62mm thick and 8.7mm wide. It weighs 1.8g
