A complete enamelled copper alloy Limoges reliquary mount in the form of a saint. The mount depicts a robed male figure standing facing. The head is life-like, solid and originally would have had two enamelled pellets representing the eyes, although these are now missing. The other facial features are very worn. The body is convex and has two rivet holes down the centre. The bottom perimeter of the mount is straight. The robe is decorated with ten or eleven longitudinal cells that would have been filled with enamel and were designed to highlight and represent the folds in the figure's robes - one cell retains the majority of its blue enamel, the other cells are empty or contain only a small fragment of the original enamel. One cell in the centre of the mount retains some red enamel, showing that these were colourful items in their time. Mounts such as these are often seen in sets decorating the sides of religious caskets, or as mounts on a crucifix, and some suggest that they may have represented saints or the Apostles. The style orignates in Limoges, France, from where they get their name and they date from the late 12th century into the 13th century.
