An incomplete probable tranchet type axehead of Mesolithic date (8300-4500 BC), missing both butt and cutting end. It measures 74.68x39.60x23.57mm and weighs 66.5g.
The flint surface has 100% patination with iron staining along the arises. In cross-section the axehead is lentoid and both faces have large flake scars. An areas of cortex is visible on one face only. The breaks at either end are ancient and display patination to a lesser extent than the rest of the surface. Recent plough damage shows a dark grey flint underneath.
One face has an area of possible polishing, suggesting it could also be Neolithic in date (up to 2100 BC), though it would be rather narrow, thin and small.
