A superb example of a cast copper alloy Roman Trumpet brooch dating to the 1st/2nd century AD. This artefact has deep relief moulded designs covering the whole frontal surface and has the remnants of a silvered finish.
The head has a now missing head loop with an intact spring mechanism to the rear. That mechanism consists of the axial rod and counter wound spring still in situ. Each end of the axial rod has been hammered over to keep it in situ.
The topmost section has an elaborately moulded symmetrical curvilinear design extending down to the central boss, or pseudo acanthus moulding. That moulding consists of a large central transverse disc with concave channels encircled on each side by a smaller disc, the lower of which has further banded and pellet relief.
Moving down the brooch bow, the cross section changes from circular to 'D' shape and tapers slightly towards the foot with the catch plate extended from the rear. The front section again having a deep relief moulding consisting of a central ridge and symmetrical side 'wavy' ridges running down to the foot knop. That moulding is terminated with a simple disc or transverse rib with a circular expanded foot and bottom knop. The catch plate is largely missing but that which remains has a small piercing at the lower section and the remnants of the silver wash.
Brooches of this type can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches; page 326-328.
