WEIGHT

Unique ID: WAW-CC4127

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast lead steelyard weight. In profile the weight is a sub-drop shape, which is circular in section. The upper apex of the weight has iron protruding; originally this would have formed a loop. The surface of the weight has a dark cream coloured patina. The weight weighs 854g which is almost 2 lbs. It measures 55.04mm long, and 55.41mm in diameter.

The weight is likely to be Romano-British, dating to mid 1st to mid third century. Barford, Blockley and Day (1984 'A Romano-British Steelyard From Marshfield, Avon'.) illustrate a similar weight dating to the Roman period, as does Allason-Jones and Miket (1984 Catalogue of Small Finds from South Shields Roman Fort Gloucester), Nos. 8.46 and 8.47.
