Cast lead button, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile and section, with an integral square lug on the back, perforated with a square hole. The button's face is decorated with two raised crosses, expanded to the edge from a central boss, which divide the face into eight sections, surmounted by an internal circle which then divides the face into sixteen sections. Each of the outer eight sections holds one raised pellet. This pattern can be seen commonly on lead tokens dating from the Medieval period, but is also found on buttons from this time.
Read (2005) illustrates similar buttons on page 18, Nos.50 & 53, which date from the 15th century.
Bailey (2004) illustrates a similar button on page 17, Fig.6.1, which dates from the 14th to the 15th century.
