A Post Medieval copper alloy Nuremberg jetton. A 'ship-penny' jetton dating to circa 1490-1550. The obverse design is of a sailing ship and the reverse has four fleur de lis inside a lozenge. The inscription of these tokens would have been in French but this token is worn and therefore illegible. These are anonymous issues which were designed by jetton-makers in Nuremberg for the French market. Diameter 25.55mm, thickness 0.58mm , weight 1.3g.
cf Mitchiner, 1988 ' Jetons, Medalets & Tokens - The Medieval period and Nuremberg' Vol 1. pages 365-375.nos, 1121-1186.
Notes:
Obverse inscription is illegible but would have read [VOLGVE LA GALLEE DE FRANCE]
Reverse inscription is also illegible but would have read [VIVE LE BON ROI DE FRANCE]
