A complete cast copper alloy brooch with copper pin. The brooch is in the shape of a cross, made up of four circular domed knops arranged around a slightly larger central domed knop. The reverse of the knops are flat and three of the knops have a hollow underside while the remaining two opposing knops are solid as they support the pin and catchplate mechinisms seperately. The pin is not sprung, rather it is mounted onto a simple bar that swivels between two small protruding lugs pierced to take the bar.
The brooch is in very good condition, of substantial construction and is covered in a nice greeny-blue patina. The style of the brooch suggests an Iron Age date but it is a very unusual style of brooch and no comparisions could be found in any of Hattatt's publications. There are two similar brooches recorded on the database; BUC-ED2437 is very similar, and WAW-DD1642 is also a related type. In this record, it is noted that the brooch style shares decorative similarities to the hangers from a chatelaine/distributor from Giubiasco, Switzerland (Jope, E.M. 2000 Early Celtic Art in the British Isles Clarendon Press Oxford, p. 285 No. 225 h).
