A copper alloy Medieval Indian coin; probably a 2 Gani denomination of the Sultans of Delhi, Ala al-Din Muhammad Shah dating from 1296-1316 AD. It is 15.5mm in diameter and 2.7mm thick. It weighs 3.33gm. It is in very good condition.
Paul Cannon has kindly provided the following additional information: "Ala al-Din Muhammad Shah belonged to the Khalji family, the second dynasty of the Sultans of Delhi. His coins can easily be picked out of the list on the website below and there are several parallels there. 'Muhammad Shah' (in Arabic) appears within two concentric circles. On a larger flan the date would appear outside of these but on this coin the date is not visible.
For coins of this same type see http://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=6706&page=1 on pages 6-10 (inclusive). The most up to date reference to this coin is in "The Coins of the Indian Sultanates, Covering the Area of Present Day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh" by Stan Goran & J P Goenka (New Delhi 2001) ref D233. See also British Museum Catalogue "The Coins of the Sultans of Delhi in the British Museum" by Stanley Lane-Poole (1884) nos. 182-194."
