A lead alloy post medieval weight. It is an uneven octagonal shape in plan, and rectangular in section. It is 52.5mm in diameter and 11.1mm thick. It weighs 221gm which is 7.75oz. It was almost certainly intended to be an 8oz weight. The upper face is marked with incuse Roman numerals "VIII" and above are two stamped star designs. These are six pointed with a smaller six pointed star in the centre which is in relief. The two marks seem to have been made with the same stamp. One arm of each is truncated. On the reverse if less distinct mark in a large trefoil shape. This may not be intentional. The weight has a creamy patina. No close parallel for this weight has been found, but DENO-CA6F02 is also stamped with a star motif, though without the inner stars. The crispness of the design suggests a fairly late date, but lead weights were not commonly used after 1800, so a seventeenth or eighteenth century date is suggested.
