A fragment of a copper alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating from the 5th or 6th century. It is 62.8mm long, 17.7mm wide and 12.9mm thick. It weighs 18.04g.

Only the foot of the brooch survives. It has a flat panel at the top, decorated with two pairs of transverse grooves with side notches above the upper pair and bevelled edges above the lower pair. Then there is a half-round panel, also decorated with two pairs of transverse grooves, but this time placed on raised bands with a deep U-shaped groove between.

Beneath this is the horse-head terminal. It has protruding pyramidal eyes, with pairs of grooves forming a triangle round each. The nose is triangular in cross-section, and there are joined pointed-oval nostrils which are slightly raised and decorated with a pair of grooves at the top.The reverse of the foot is hollowed throughout, and there are the remains of a copper-alloy catchplate with staining from an iron pin.

At the base of the brooch is a projecting narrow loop at 90 degrees to the bow, pierced from side to side. This would probably originally have held a 'spangle' or pendant. The brooch has a glossy grey green patina and the break at the top of the surviving fragment is patinated.

Brooches of this form are known in German as 'Klapperschmuck' (literally 'rattle-jewellery'). This example dates to the 5th or 6th centuries AD. Compare SF-1DB206.
