Late Roman cast cu-alloy mount, probably dating from c. AD200-410. The mount is incomplete or possibly a large fragment. It has a nicely moulded obverse made up of typical Roman 'trumpet' design, but the reverse is not finished at all. There are no clear breaks, but it is like that it was broken at the upper end. There are no rivet holes or other pointers as to how it was attached to a leather strap or similar. This is probably further evidence that the item is incomplete.
Cast cu-alloy mounts such as this are associated with the Roman cavalry and were probably used on horse harness. The trumpet motif is an Iron Age design that continued in fashion into the Roman period. Bishop and Coulston, 1993, Roman Military Equipment, Batsford Books, London, illustrate similar mounts on page 156, numbers 8, 9 and 10. Following these examples, the mount recorded here probably dates to the third century.
