An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), Mackreth 2011, 4.a-c. Plate 46. The wings are semi-cylindrical but are incomplete and abraded. It is not certain whether they had wing caps or not. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The wings are undecorated. The bowhead is hump-like in profile, oval in section and on each side of the head there are semi-circular mouldings which is a characteristic feature of this brooch type. The bow head and bow are undecorated. The bow tapers to a blunt point which is a broken terminal. This break was not recent. The catchplate is therefore missing. The surface of the brooch is abraded and has areas of a matte dark green/grey patina. It measures 28.21mm long, 23.59mm wide across the wings and weighs 7.8g.
Bayley and Butcher (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
