An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, West Midlands), cf. Mackreth 2011, 4.i. Plate 47 . The wings are semi-cylindrical, terminating with incomplete perforated wing caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The wings are undecorated. In the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is an integral hook which would have supported the spring chord. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is sub semi-circular in section. The bow head is decorated with a central deep groove which continues down the bow. Either side of this groove there are obliquely angled notches which start at the bow head and continue down the bow. The lower portion of the bow is missing, the break is possibly recent. On the reverse ofthe bow a small portion of the catchplate remains before the bow is broken. The surface of the brooch has a light green/grey patina. It measures 29.42mm long, 13.99mm wide across the wings and weighs 2.5g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type. Bayley and Butcher (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
