A cast copper alloy finger ring. The bezel is a oval in plan and has a flat surface with traces of a white metal alloy wash/coating. The bezel is thin in profile, only 1.62mm thick. The shoulds of the hoop are slightly narrowed compared to the bezel and are a sub-trapezoidal in plan, but hte terminals of the shoulders both have broken edges. These appear to be recent breaks which has been partly due to how thin the shoulders are. in section the shoulders are an elogated semi-circle. The surface of the ring has a mid green patina and the white metal wash as mentioned above. It measures 13.09mm long from the upper edge to the lower edge of the bezel, and it is 20.96mm wide from the bezel side to the outer edge of the shoulder. It weighs 3.4g.
The finger ring is Roman. Crummy (Crummy, N 1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust), describes many decorative Roman copper alloy finger rings such as this as dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries, for example No. 1783 is very similar.
