Cast copper alloy dragonesque brooch dating to the Roman period, (43-410AD). The object consists of an S-shaped plate with moulded relief decoration. In the centre of the object is a circular moulded decoration. At each end of the plate are stylised zoomorphic terminals. These are pointed oval in plan with large circular pellets at their centre representing the creature's eye. The base of the object is flat, and the pin and catchplate have broken away. Similar examples in terms of form but with enamelled decoration are noted in Hattatt (1989: nos. 155, 1026). Bayley and Butcher (2004: pp. 171-172) discuss the development of the type, noting a marked concentration of finds in Northern Britain in both military and 'native' sites, suggesting a date range during the Early Roman period of the 1st to 2nd centuries AD. The object is worn and has a dark green patina.
