A curved fragment of a copper-alloy Roman cable bracelet. The bracelet has an incomplete curved length of 143.00 mm. The fragment is formed of three strands of copper-alloy twisted round each other. The strands have a circular cross section, each strand having a diameter of 3.86mm tapering to 2.49mm. The three strands together give the band a diameter of 8.30mm tapering to 6.02mm. All of the strands at the narrower end are level but at the wider end they have broken off at different lengths. The bracelet has a mid green patina with lots of small patches of lighter green corrosion. There are approximately thirty-three other examples of cable bracelets on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (P.A.S.) database, to date, however two stranded cable bracelets seem to be more common than those formed of three strands. See P.A.S. record number WILT-B537D1 for another example of a three stranded version. Four stranded examples of cable bracelets also exist see Crummy, N. 1983 (p.38-39), figure 41, item 1628 shows a three stranded example, item 1633 shows a four stranded example and items 1610-1613 are of two strands.
