A cast copper alloy finger ring with moulded decoration, most likely of medieval date (1200 to 1500 AD).

The finger ring consists of a cast copper alloy hoop with moulded decoration. It has a D shaped cross section with a prominent ridge on the external surface. This central ridge is 2.7mm wide and is flanked by two parallel recessed edges, each 1.1mm wide. The edges demonstrate a repeating series of small vertical incised lines all around the circumference of the hoop. The central ridge demonstrates six areas of decoration (1 panel repeated three times). The panel consists of about 15 vertical incised lines over a 11mm section. Prior to this section of incised lines is a stamped star design, with 6 radiating spokes, the lower point however has not impressed very well.

The internal surface of the ring exhibits a large number of file marks. No inscription appears to be present.

The ring measures: 24.77mm external diameter, 21.27mm internal diameter, 4.52mm width and 1.83mm thick. It weighs 2.9 grams.

Several comparative examples have been recorded. WMID-6296C3 is of a similar style, although the decoration is slightly different, was recovered from a site in Staffordshire as well. Excavations in London have turned up similar examples, with a similar style of decoration but without the prominent ridge. (Pritchard, 2002, p332, examples 1627 and 1629). The two examples from London came from contexts dated to the 15th Century.
