A solid cast, Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval (1500 to 1700 AD) domed lead alloy button.
The head of the button is plano-convex in shape, with a flat base and domed top. The front of the button is decorated with an embossed (slightly raised) long cross design with a central pellet in each quarter. The ends of the cross split into two separate ends at the base of the head. The back of the head is plain.
Two stumps remain of the shank or stem of the button. They would have originally projected away from the head of the button and joined together to form a loop. The casting seam is present as a horizontal line across the back of the head, including the remains of the stem.
Buttons of a similar type are on pages 29 and 35 in Bailey (2004).
The head of the button is 8.44mm high, with a diameter of 14.77mm. The overall height including the stumps of the stem is 9.04mm high. It weighs 7.6 grams.
