13th-15th Century. Copper alloy, cast, large ring/annular brooch pin. Length 50.2mm, Width 14.2mm, Thickness 4.3mm, Weight 6.6g. Plain type, except for a rectangular panel of transverse grooves just in front of the incomplete circular attachment end. The shaft which is roughly square in section, swells out before narrowing towards a blunted 'pointed' terminal. Fastened by pulling a tuck of material through the ring and then pushing the pin through; any excess material was then pulled back and the brooch thus tensioned and secured. In this case the garment had an open weave or woolen cloth, judging by the size of the pin. Attractive dark brown even, glossy patina. Ref.
