Post Medieval silver medallion depicting Charles I, 26mm long 20mm wide and 1 mm thick. The object is in good condition and weighs 1.30grams. The object shows a finely engraved left facing bust of king Charles set in an ornate border with two sub rectangular protrusions at each side and a fixing loop at the head and base of the object. The reverse of the object shows the royal garter seal. The upper loop still has a silver chain link present and just below this, in the body of the object are two small circular holes which may have been added to provide a method of sewing the medallion in place.
The object is almost identical to one in the British Museum ref MG.1444
These medallions were issued to be worn by friends and partisans of the monarch. It is also believed that some were given out as 'proto medals' for services rendered during the English civil war.
