A cast copper alloy Roman brooch, probably an Aucissa type dating from c. 43 -100AD. The bow of the brooch has been flattened, in antiquity, damaging the patina and the curve is no longer apparent. The bow is plain, except at the shoulder, where there is a raised triangular section, bordered by a line of incised small squares. The wings are also plain and tubular, holding the remains of a ferrous pin bar. There is a wide slot for the hinged pin. The catch plate is present, but the pin is missing. The brooch has a dark green patina. It is 57.4mm long, 26.3mm wide and 12.1mm thick. It weighs 5.83gm. Reference: Hattatt, Visual catalogue, fig. 177, No. 1430.
