A cast, copper alloy spur rowel, probably medieval in date. Only the rowel survives. It has 16 points, each of which is tear drop shaped and bevelled. The central hole fr the axle has been worn on one side making it oval and no longer central. Traces of gilding survive. Officially, only knights were allowed to wear gilded spurs, but by the late 14th century there were complaints that men who were not knighted were wearing gilded spurs. The rowel spur was introduced in the 13th century and remained fashionable into the Post Medieval period. This one probably dates from the 14th century when large multi point rowels were popular.
