A complete cast copper alloy catch piece from an Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon wrist clasp probably of Hines' Form B12. It is formed from a straight rectangular bar that is rectangular in section and has raised square panels at each end and at the centre, separated by moulded transverse grooves. On the outer edge of each panel is an integrally cast, flattened semi-circular sewing loop or lug that has a central circular perforation. The centre one of these is broken. Additionally, on the inner edge of the central panel is a flat, rectangular catch piece with a central oval shaped perforation. The catch looks to be well worn. The back face of the object is slightly hollow and undecorated.
This is one half of an Anglo-Saxon wrist clasp, the loop indicating it is the catch rather than hook piece. The use of a straight bar with integrally cast sewing lugs and catch piece indicates that this belongs to Hines' Form B12, which is datable to the late-5th to 6th centuries AD (Hines, 1993: 46-49). Similar examples on the database include SF-55A251 and NMS-702565.
