A cast, copper alloy Roman brooch; T shaped type, dating fom the 2nd century. It is 72.4mm long, 19.1mm wide and 17.9mm thick. The brooch may have had a head loop, but this broken off and missing. The hinged pin (also missing) articulated with an iron axis bar in a tubular housing behind the head. The bow is fairly flate. The front is convex and the reverse is hollowed. There is a sharp change of angle near the head and then a flat front to the bow. This is decorated with a vertical wide groove, with short narrow grooves out to the side at the corners; two at each corner, making a saltire cross over the bow. There are also tiny traces of silvering on the bow. There are some cracks in the bow where it has been bent. The foot is a simple forward projecting disc. Most of the catchplate is missing. The brooch has a dark brown patina with patches of grey green. Compare to number 409 on page 305 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue.
