A fragment of a cast copper alloy object, possibly a detachable knob from a radiate-headed brooch, of early Anglo-Saxon date. The fragment is sub-square or D-shaped when seen from above; it is a moulded animal-head terminal comprised of bulbous protrusions for the eyes, raised circular scrolls or spirals representing nostrils, and ridges with incised lines to denote the curve of the brow and nose. Above the brow, the edge of the object is straight and the corners are right-angled. The object is also a low D shape in cross-section, with a flat undecorated reverse.

At the straight end of the knob, the vertical edge is cut horizontally by a recessed line of white metal. Traces of iron corrosion are also present in the edge although it is not possible to determine whether this was part of the fitting or is due to post-depositional processes.

The metal is a dark blackish-green colour and survives in good condition. The object is 15.3mm long, 15.7mm wide, 6.4mm thick and weighs 6g.

Compare LEIC-E51A11, with further parallels noted there.

Notes:

These remains are coming from a site which is producing early-medieval cremation debris dating from the 5th - 7th Century. The finder has reported that no bone fragments or pottery sherds are evident within the plough soil.
