A late Early Medieval copper-alloy stirrup strap mount, Williams' Class B, Type 3, Group 1. The mount is roughly rectangular in plan, with a slight arch to the upper two corners. The apertures are tiered in pairs; one pair forms the ears of a prominant head, of which the base of the nose sits just above the turn of the flange. To either side of the head, running from the flange to the apex, is an incised beast shown in profile. The snout of each beast form two a small knops at the top edges of the mount. The flange is inturned and the two rivet holes have worn through the edge. There are no traces of iron corrosion.
In his 1997 publication of stirrup strap mounts, Williams' lists eight mounts of Type 3, Group 1, all of which were found in Lincolnshire or Norfolk. In his catalogue, fig. 56 no. 420 is almost identical to the example presented here.
