FINGER RING

Unique ID: SF-D4DC97

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper-alloy finger ring of Roman date. Only the bezel and one shoulder of the ring survive intact, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The bezel is flat, oval shaped in form and with a border decorated with numerous short incised diagonal grooves. The surviving shoulder is flat, D-shaped in section with flat back and rounded front face, and separated from the besel by a transverse moulded groove. On the front face of the shoulder can be seen moulded decoration comprising a transverse groove at the bezel end, from which six grooves extend down the centre of the shoulder with numerous short diagonal grooves forming borders to either side. This ring fragment measures 16.42mm in height/width, 19.51mm in length, 2.53mm in thickness at bezel, and weighs 4.65g.

This is a fragment from a finger ring of probable Roman date. Similar examples with flattened oval or circular bezel and expanded shoulders are noted on the PAS database (for example LIN-82C4A1 or NARC-E69493) and in an example from South Shields (Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984: no. 168).
