A cast, copper alloy Roman bow brooch of the Hod Hill type dating from c. 43 - 75 AD. The bow of the brooch is decorated with a central collar flanked by a raised transverse ridge above and below. The collar is beaded and the moulding is only on the front of the bow. There is a similar moulding at the head of the brooch and at the foot. The lower bow is lozenge shaped. The upper bow is rectangular and decorated with two double incised vertical lines. The wings, if there were any, are missing. The top of the bow forms a tubular housing for the axis bar with a slot for the copper alloy pin. The catch plate remains complete, as does a short section of the pin bar and a short section of pin. The upper side of the brooch has been silvered, of which significant traces remain. The uncoated surfaces of the brooch have a dark green patina. The brooch is 35.6mm long, 8.7mm wide and 14.8mm thick. It weighs 3.91gm. Reference: Hattat, Visual Catalogue, Fig. 179, No. 1503.
