Incomplete fragment of a clay tobacco pipe bowl of late Post Medieval date (c.1690).
The pipe fragment measures 55.72mm length, bowl diameter 21.02mm, heel diameter 11.87mm, stem diameter 9.43mm, bore diameter 2.64mm, weight 13.2 grams.
The information within this report is taken from information provided by MrRexKey of Broseley Pipe Museum to which sincere thanks are extended.
It is a Broseley style pipe, similar to David Atkinson's Broseley Type 5a classification, with an oval tailed heel, dated to c. 1680-1720. The relief heel mark is incomplete and consists of a gaunlet surrounded by a circle of pellets (3 of which are visible) within a circular cartouche. To date this particular maker's mark has not been attributed to any individual pipemaker.
The pipe shows signs of burnishing (straight, smoothing strokes) and rouletting - all typical Broseley finishing techniques.
