An incompletecast copper alloy Anglo-Scandiniavian cheekpiece dating to the 11th century. Williams (2007) Type 2. The cheekpiece is shaped like an elongated triangle, with a long, slightly tapered projection that terminates in a rounded knop. The opposite end is triangular but has broken across the hole where the cheekpiece would have attached to the iron bit. The front of the cheekpiece is decorated in what appears to be scroll or possibly floral designs, although it is too worn for further identification. The reverse of the cheekpiece is flat and plain.

Notes:

This cheekpiece fragment would have originally been one of a pair that would have attached to the iron bit on either side of the horse's bridle. A small number of Type 2 cheekpieces have previously been recorded on this database.
