Incomplete fragment of a clay tobacco pipe bowl of late Post Medieval date (c.1686).
The pipe fragment measures 48.24mm length, bowl diameter 20.72mm, heel diameter 13.75mm, stem diameter 9.86mm, bore diameter 2.89mm, weight 13.7 grams.
The information within this report is taken from information provided by MrRexKey of Broseley Pipe Museum to which sincere thanks are extended.
It is a Broseley style pipe, similar to David Atkinson's Broseley Type 3a classification, with an oval heel, dated to c. 1670-1680. The relief heel mark is incomplete and consists of the initials WS within a rectangular style cartouche, with wavy lines above and below the initials. The initials have been identified as probably those belonging to William Savage, a Much Wenlock pipemaker until his death in 1686.
The pipe shows signs of burnishing (straight, smoothing strokes) and rouletting - all typical Broseley finishing techniques.
