Incomplete fragment of a clay tobacco pipe of late Post Medieval date (c.1680-1720).
The pipe fragment measures 44.12mm length, bowl diameter 20.55mm, stem diameter 10.81mm, bore diameter 2.93mm, weight 9.6 grams.
The information within this report is taken from information provided by MrRexKey of Broseley Pipe Museum to which sincere thanks are extended.
It is a Broseley style pipe, similar to David Atkinson's Broseley Type 5A classification, with an oval heel, dated to c. 1680-1720. The relief heel mark is incomplete and consists of the initials ?R within a circular cartouche. The initials have been identified as probably those belonging to Thomas Roden, a Broseley Pipemaker, working c.1680-1720.
The pipe shows signs of burnishing (straight, smoothing strokes) and rouletting - all typical Broseley finishing techniques.
