Four sherds of a heavily shell-tempered fabric from the wall (three sherds) and flat-bottomed base (one sherd) of a probably hand-thrown vessel. The inside surfaces are orange-buff in colour with prominent flecking from the shelly inclusions, but fracture surfaces reveal a dark grey reduced core. The base sherd could indicate these to be later, Middle Saxon, sherds; it suggests a basal diameter of circa 170mm. Sandra Firth kindly suggests this is an example of Maxey Ware, a Middle Saxon fabric dated 680-870. Suggested date: Early Medieval: 680 to 870.
Lengths: 50mm, 48mm, 46mm, 42mm. Thickness of vessel wall: 7.5mm. Combined Weight: 62.91gms.
