Copper alloy stirrup-strap mount. A sub-triangular mount, decorated with the raised imaged of a lion looking upwards, with its right foreleg raised and tail curled above its body, all within a riased outer border. The mane is formed from two rows of irregular indentations. Below the lion, the border is slightly thicker and is pierced with two attachment holes (with traces of iron corrosion around them to the reverse). The reverse of the mount is undecorated and has a central 'common right-angled flange' (Williams 1997, p.25), protruding from the lower edge, which is shorter than the width of the mount and irregular in shape. The apex loop is damaged, all that remains is a curlicue section to the right side and the edge of an apparently off-centre hole. The mount is a Williams Class A, Type 11A (ibid. pp.58-69) with a left-facing lion. Williams suggests that these strap mounts were in use from the first quarter of the 11th century at the earliest, until around the end of the same century (ibid. p.8). Lewis (2007, p.184) has since offered a more precise date range of c.1070-c.1140.
