An incomplete medieval composite buckle with integral box plate, missing only its lower sheet (c. 15th century). The oval frame is bevelled both externally and internally; the former is far shallower. The lower surface is flat. Two transverse incisions at the outer edge suggest a pin rest on the upper surface. There is a central perforation at the junction of frame and plate that retains a pin of thick sheet construction. The pin is triangular in plan and bent upwards after the loop; the lower surface is recessed. The waisted junction is moulded (min. W.: 16.9mm), with a transverse ridge at the start of the box plate. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with an angular quatrefoil within an incised rectangular border. Each of the separate leaves has a diagonal incision at the end of which is a perforation. The trapezoidal plate expands to a width of 22.3mm at the attachment end. The buckle is recessed on the lower surface to accommodate the strap, with sides that curve round. The strap would have been held in place by a sheet plate which is joined to the buckle by a rivet in each corner, as described; the sheet is now missing. The artefact is now largely dark brown in colour with traces of green and off-white corrosion product. Traces of tinning survive around the pin hole on the upper surface. A buckle of similar construction can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 38; ref. 225).
