BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-1D0E85

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon Small-Long brooch. Only the foot and catchplate survive, the remainder of the brooch now missing due to old breaks. The foot is flat, rectangular in form with a flaring bilobate terminal end that has a rounded bottom edge. At the top of the foot are projecting rectangular lappets, possibly with traces of punched annulets, although this is uncertain due to corrosion. Separating the foot from the terminal is a moulded transverse panel with central transverse rectangular rib. The bilobate foot has a border of punched annulets. On the back face of the foot is an integrally cast catchplate that is rectangular in form with folded outer edge. This brooch measures 35.87mm in length, 31.21mm in width at terminal, 10.06mm in width at foot, 7.57mm in thickness at catchplate, and weighs 9.58g.

This is an Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch similar to examples in the Ashmolean Museum (for example: MacGregor and Bolick, 1993: nos. 15.59-63). It dates to the 6th century, c.500-600 AD.
