TREASURE CASE 2010 T258: incomplete silver fragment

Period: late 15th to early 16th century

Circumstances of discovery: whistle metal detecting

Description: silver fragment, clearly torn off something larger. Perhaps the border of a very thin silver cup. Panel incised with black letters, now indecipherable. Traces of gilding.

Dimensions: Length, 38.91mm Width, 13.81mm Thickness, 0.78mm Weight, 2.6 grams

Discussion: Lettering and form of inscription suggests late 15th- early 16th century date. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996. Dora Thornton British Museum
