A Post Medieval  colth seal  dating to 1571 AD. This type of seal with the rivets and corresponding holes went on each newly woven textile. This exampe is from a  Dutch-immigrant community Colchester seal. The inscription reads:

DUYT(S) (?7)O CRUI(S) / (BAY)E VA(N) /

(C)OLCESTER /(1)57(1) -

ie 'Dutch seventy [refers to warp thread-count]  cross [refers to weave - ??twill] bay [cf. baize] of Colchester [founded] 1571.'

Geoff Egan notes that the use of Dutch suggests a first-generation immigrant milieu. These particular seals are so far only known from London.

Inscription: DUYT(S) (?7)O CRUI(S) / (BAY)E VA(N) / (C)OLCESTER /(1)57(1) -
